Alexander Isley

Alexander Isley is an American designer and educator.  He first gained recognition in the 1980s as the senior designer at Tibor Kalman’s influential M&Co. He was the first full-time art director of the influential Spy magazine. He founded Alexander Isley Inc. in 1988.


Alex has a degree environmental design from NC State University, where he is a distinguished alumnus. He holds a B.F.A. from The Cooper Union  in New York.He has served as an instructor at The Cooper Union, R.I.S.D., and at the School of Visual Arts in New York. Since 1996 he has been a lecturer and critic at the Yale Graduate School of Art.Alex was selected as an inaugural member of “The I.D. 40,” an overview of America's leading design innovators. His work is in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art, the Smithsonian Institution, and the Library of Congress. His work has been exhibited at the Georges Pompidou Center in Paris and various museums within the United States. He is the recipient of a Federal Design Achievement Award.Alex is past president of AIGA (American Institute of Graphic Arts) New York. He is a member of AGI.
